I’ve decided to take you up on that offer, if it still stands. I need away from this place.

I would, if you told me where you were going. But we’d need to have a system of trust. No hurting people, or animals. If that were to happen, we’d need to rethink things.

It’ll be nice to have someone else in the house besides me.

That can be arranged. Just one place, really. A cemetery. I won’t hurt anyone, I just want to…talk to her. Charlotte. She was…well, it doesn’t matter. Anyway, would that be..fine?

I might be difficult to live with. I suppose it’s only fair to warn you. I’m not exactly used to sharing space with someone.

@Cutter

scottishboss:

I’ve decided to take you up on that offer, if it still stands. I need away from this place.

The offer always stands. I’d need a promise from you, though, or I don’t think the ARC would let you. I’m trusting you that your promise means something. I think you’ve won that trust. I need to know you’re not going to leave, try to find something or someone. Can you promise me that, Ethan?

Going with you gives me more freedom than I have here. If I did leave - could I tell you first? Not for good. Just…if I needed to get away, needed more space. Would you trust me to go alone?

@Cutter

I’ve decided to take you up on that offer, if it still stands.

Just so you know, this RP will return to its previous state, before the OOC randomness that happened… The other admin and I have decided what to do with this… We are going to set a set timeline and story for this. You can tangent, but we ask that you please stay somewhat linear.

The reason we…

Okay, sorry, but what OOC randomness? Do you mean the OOC posts we’ve been making to inform people we’d be out, because those are rather routine, I’d think. And if you mean the characters are being out of character, well, I don’t think so. Sure they’re playing pranks and talking about Doctor Who and such but what else are they supposed to do when there are no anomaly alerts? They do have lives outside the ARC and all.

And just curious, but why bring Helen back? I know she’s the famous big bad and all, but she kind of…had her run? I dunno, just my personal feeling. Whatever you guys wanna do, I guess.

As for the set storyline, do we get to know or are you still working on it?

Just curious.

Not sure if I owe anyone replies or not, but if I do, I’ll get right on them!

Beyond the Sun: @Emily;

Beyond the Sun: @Emily;:
herplaceintime:

I haven’t. And contrary to what you believe, Ethan, I cared for Charlotte, too. She was one of my closest friends. I didn’t want to lose her, I truly didn’t. I was just trying to keep order, to abide by our rules.

What does order matter if she’s dead? If you hadn’t been so keen on your rules, she might have stood a chance! Instead you let her die to follow tribe laws. The tribe wasn’t even there, Emily, what would they have done? They didn’t have to know, if your rules were that important to you! More important than your so-called friend’s life?

It wasn’t just about us. The rules were put in place to protect other timelines. We didn’t know what we would be affecting, who we would be affecting. And obviously I was willing to break those rules anyway to try to save Charlotte. I wish it wasn’t too late. But it was.

Saving her life wouldn’t have thrown anything out of order! All she needed was a hospital but you-

Forget it. Just stay away from me.

But it did, Ethan! A man from the ARC was killed. We’re responsible for that. Charlotte would never have wanted us to trade someone else’s life for hers.

How are we responsible? One of those tree raptors came through the gateway and got him, that doesn’t make it our fault! The creatures would have come through the gateway whether we brought Charlotte through or not.

You’re wrong. We altered things, changed the protocols they had in place. We’re responsible.

But, Ethan, we’re here now. And you can be with your brother, you can get the help you need…

I don’t agree. What happened with the creatures could have happened to any of the others. It was circumstance. That’s all.

He’s not my brother. He’s a nuisance. I want nothing to do with him.

I can do the girl thing too, you know: Ethan;

I can do the girl thing too, you know: Ethan;:
absmaitland:

absmaitland:

Protected my little brother. Those words sent a jolt through him. Up until now, he’d been operating under the assumption that Abby was like him: damaged, but a survivor. Someone with scars from the past and a fair amount of rage still left inside. But those words brought him back, reminded him that she was probably doing this for Danny’s sake, talking to him, playing nice. Trying to appeal to something in him that Danny couldn’t reach. Trying to fix him, maybe even as a substitute for her own little brother. The thought discouraged him. Maybe she wasn’t so much like him after all. Maybe the person she was really like was Danny. Danny who had his own scars and survival story to tell, Danny who had his own brother to care for.

He looked away from her, incensed to have this conversation ruined once again by the past coming back to him. Could nothing he did not be influenced by Danny and the tension that remained there? It was exhausting, holding in all this anger and hatred. Eighteen years and he still hadn’t let it go. He’d thought he was finally making some progress, and then the emotions came flooding back and knocked him down again like a strong gust of wind sweeping his feet out from under him.

Abby seemed to be waiting for a confirmation, some kind of approval. But whatever approval she thought she could gain from him, what would it be worth, really?

He turned back to her, sizing her up, reevaluating her with the new knowledge in mind; that she was more like Danny than she was like him. For one thing, she cared too much. Still he could find little reason to lie.

“Just like my brother, then,” he said. Take that as she would. To him, it was practically scornful, but she had a different opinion of Danny and perhaps the comparison would not seems so grave to her.

He snorted. “That’s understating it.” There was never any peace and quiet. During the day there was an influx of people parading in and out of the corridor, not to mention his brother and his friends coming to drop by and ask questions or in Danny’s case desperately try to reconcile feelings Ethan refused to acknowledge. Even at night when everyone went home the lights remained on and some of Lester’s staff stuck around, filing, cleaning, organizing. Whatever it was, whatever the time, there was never much quiet.

He nodded at her, ackonwledging her thanks and tilting his head curiously at the chocolate bar she pulled from her bag. The smell itself was appetizing, and it brought back memories - not clear ones, more sensations than anything else. Mementos of a lost, happier time. He lost himself to reminiscing for a few moments and came out of it blinking when Abby offered him some of the chocolate.

A bit embarrassed to have been caught staring, he shrugged noncommitantly and held out his hand, taking the gift. He broke the chocolate and savoured it slowly, unused to the sweetness after years of eating whatever was available to him.

“Thank you.”

She realized he’d gone quiet. Had she said something wrong? Did she—-upset him? Looking back on what she had said the only thing she could think of was protecting Jack. Did that make him angry, then? Obviously she still didn’t understand his triggers.

Ethan refused to look at her for a few minutes so they sat in silence, nothing more but the people of the ARC talking outside the room. She decided it was best not to stare, it could make him uncomfortable, so she looked at her hands. Playing with the bracelets around her wrist, most specifically Cutter’s. She liked the bracelet and charm he gave her…

Abby looked up at him when he said she was like Danny. She knew he thought of it as more of an insult, so she wasn’t sure how to take it. To her, being Danny was only a bad thing when he bottled everything up and let it all fall apart in front of him like an idiot.

Though, they all had something they preferred to do whether it was good or not. Connor was the crier, Lester was the hider of all emotions, Danny was the one who let everything break when it got too much, Becker was the emotionally confused one, Jess was a mix between Connor and Becker, Emily and Matt were the strong ones who didn’t let emotions bother them too much, Cutter was another emotionally confused one, and her? She was determined to be strong until she broke. She’d already broken before but she had a pretty solid fix. Hopefully.

“Being Danny ain’t so bad,” She shrugged. “to me anyways.”

“Yeah, the ARC isn’t an ideal place to live.” Abby stopped for a moment, thinking of what to say next. “Tell me honestly…am I bothering you? Because I’m pretty determined to be, in the very least nice to you. It’d only be customary to respect your wishes.”

She watched him, like a child who only got to get candy on Halloween. Savoring every bit, every taste, every sensation it brought. Her herself didn’t need to do that, she knew if she wanted to, she could raid Connor’s office and find a couple others. Or she could go home. Or to a store. He couldn’t.

“You’re welcome.”

Abby wasn’t sure if they were friends or what, but at least they could—-get along without threatening to shoot each other.

Ethan snorted. “I don’t seem to have any other choice - don’t,” he said, glaring at the wall, “mention Danny. I won’t accept that offer. But you know that.”

Danny had offered him a place with him, even offered to arrange times so they wouldn’t have to see each other, but that wasn’t an offer he thought he could handle. Just the thought of being under the same roof as Danny again brought all sorts of long-forgotten memories to the fore-front. Pointless, nostalgic memories he would rather keep locked away. The memories felt foreign to him, as though he were reliving someone else’s past, and aside from the uncomfortable side-effects of nostalgia, they unsettled him. He pushed the thoughts away.

“No,” he said, surprising himself. “You’re not bothering me. I said I wanted to be left alone, but you’re…not so bad.” He smiled. “You and the professor, you’re not bad company.”

“Yeah, I know.” She nodded. “Maybe you can find somewhere else to live, I dunno. Cutter’s getting a place soon, Lester just has to buy it first…I’m sure he wouldn’t mind you living with him.”

Abby knew that everyone had offered him a place at Danny’s house since he practically got here. Lester didn’t want to have to deal with him, was what she was sure of. He also didn’t want any high-standing officials seeing that they have a certifiably insane person living in the ARC along with his goofy older brother who made paper cranes just to litter the place. The brother he despised.

“I’m glad I’m not.” A small smile appeared on her face.

Live with the professor? That was…unexpected. The professor barely knew him and he was offering a place for him, after being away on his own for so long? Or maybe that was it, that he saw some kind of kinship in that. He was certainly interested in the gateways, and in his knowledge of them, whatever it was he thought Ethan could teach him. But the idea wasn’t so terrible. The man seemed conscientious enough to know when he wanted space. Professor Cutter didn’t seem the type of man to loom. If it could get him out of this blasted place and its soldiers breathing down his neck, maybe it was worth it.

He nodded to Abby. ”That’s not a bad idea. I’ll consider it.”

The freedom alone would be worth it. Not to mention it would give him some distance from his brother. Surely Danny wouldn’t insist on coming with him, let alone the professor would allow it. At least, he hoped not. Lately it seemed like there was nothing Danny wouldn’t do. But right now, as he told Abby, he just needed space.

His eyes slid over to Abby again. “And…thanks. For understanding. And lunch.”

OOC; FREEDOM!

The creatures would have come through the gateway whether we brought Charlotte through or not.

I can do the girl thing too, you know: Ethan;

I can do the girl thing too, you know: Ethan;:
absmaitland:

“…just because you stopped believing in something you were once promised does not mean that the promise itself was a lie. Childhood, at its best, is a perpetual adventure, in the truest sense of that overtaxed word: a setting-forth into trackless lands that might have come into existence the instant before you first laid eyes on them.”

I can do the girl thing too, you know: Ethan;

I can do the girl thing too, you know: Ethan;:
absmaitland:

“He beat you?” Ethan frowned. He might not seem very sympathetic, and the truth was that he didn’t know these people that well at all, really, but that didn’t mean he was heartless. Whatever they thought about him, he wasn’t. He just preferred - no, preferred would mean he’d had a choice, and his life had left little room for choices - chose to wrap his emotions up, cloak them behind a shield of anger and hatred and bitterness because without that buffer, he never would have survived. But he wasn’t heartless. Charlotte could attest to that.

And he might not know Abby that well, certainly not well enough to consider her a friend, although the way things have gone so far she was the closest thing he had to one, but the idea still unsettled him. Her anger and defensiveness made sense to him now, even if the actions behind them didn’t. Despite what his life had become since stepping through that gateway, his home life before that had been perfectly normal, even happy. His parents had always got on and they’d loved their children like any parent should. To be denied that, and even brutalized, by someone who was supposed to protect you… He could hardly imagine it. He’d seen a lot of horrors, even inflicted a few himself to be sure, but what Abby told him was unsettling.

“I’m sorry,” he said finally, aware the words were a bit useless but unable to come up with anything else. “That’s…I can’t imagine.” He shook his head. Devastating at the least. The entire reason he turned out like he did, full fo rage and bitterness, was because his brother had given him an expectation, a standard to hold him to and he’d failed to meet it. But if their family had been violent one, like Abby’s, there would have been no love lost between them from the start. If he was in her shoes, he would have turned out completely different. With nothing to hope for, he might have simply given up in that other world and laid down with the creatures to die. But the fact was that his family did care and well, if anything it gave him a little bit of perspective.

“Exactly,” he nodded and his gaze became distant, far-away. “I think mostly I just want peace from myself. When you’re trapped out there, alone, you tend to ask a lot of questions.” Rhetorical questions, moral questions, introspective questions. Questions that became harder and harder to answer as he went on, and eventually ones he ignored altogether in order just to exist, like whether or not he had it in him to kill a human being, when necessary. And then there came a point where, like the questions, the hesitation wasn’t even necessary. He just forgot it and moved on.

“Hey…” he said, speaking quietly, when she shut her eyes. Maybe her memories were overwhelming her. God knows he was familiar with that. And while he himself would want to be left alone when dealing with his inner demons, it felt wrong to say nothing. “Are you …okay?”

Ethan nodded, accepting her apology - and more than a little surprised by it. As far as he knew he did nothing so far that warranted an apology. “Heh,” he breathed softly, studying his hands again. “I’m starting to see that now.”

“Yeah,” She murmured, looking down at the table she had sat down at a long while ago. She realized she hadn’t even began to touch her lunch. She was too involved in the conversation. She could always eat it later, hopefully. It wasn’t such a big deal, she would simply hide out in Connor’s office with him and eat it. She’d done it several other times. “Yeah, he beat me…a lot of different ways too. That was his biggest problem. He never chose just one way…he liked seeing people in pain. He was quite sick in the head…”

Abby realized something about Ethan then. That everyone was portraying him wrong, going about him as if he didn’t care about anything or anyone. But he had let her see that he did care, even if he wasn’t the best at showing it. It was as if he trusted her, as if he was trying to make friends with her. If anyone had told her a couple months ago that she’d actually sit at a table and talk—-willingly—-to the man who tried to kill not only Emily, but Becker as well…she never would’ve thought they were just as crazy as him.

“It’s—-it’s fine,” But she had stuttered on those words. It wasn‘t fine…but at least she turned out…not like him. “I did what I had to do. I protected my little brother, he turned out…okay. I survived. I turned out alright, yeah?” It was as if she needed approval from him even though she could tell herself everyday…she turned out right. She did things that saved the world, that saved creatures, she was a good person. Yet she still needed to be told for some reason. As if she was expecting an answer from Ethan.

She nodded her head as if she understood what he had gone through. She hadn’t though and she knew. She kept reminding herself she had Connor. Back there in the Cretaceous, they’d become family. They learned everything and they protected each other. And Ethan was alone. Danny was alone. They had no one to help them, no one to call a friend.

“I guess you haven’t had much of a break since you’ve been…home?” She wondered if he’d ever gotten a break. Lester certainly wasn’t the friendliest of beings, Danny was on his case often, and no one really gave him an option to just take a break from everything. Yet they did for her and Connor. They ordered them to go on a vacation. It didn’t seem very fair to her.

While Abby’s eyes were closed, she heard him talking. Asking the question she hated. But there was something about the situation, about the person asking it. For one of the few times in her life, she didn’t quite mind the question. She took a deep breath.

“I’m alright,” She gave a weak smile, grabbing her bag full of food. “Thank you.” She grabbed a Cadbury Bar, something that Connor loved to sneak into all the lunches he made (mostly to keep himself from eating fifty) and bit into it. “Want some? I gave you the healthy lunch,” She assumed it must’ve been a long time since he had eaten just a bar of chocolate.

Protected my little brother. Those words sent a jolt through him. Up until now, he’d been operating under the assumption that Abby was like him: damaged, but a survivor. Someone with scars from the past and a fair amount of rage still left inside.
My kitty.

OH MY GOSH LET ME STEAL YOUR KITTY!

…There a kitten at a pet store and it was screaming and me and it wanted me…and I was going to name her Maitland.

But I can’t have her…because I’ve got a dog and two cats at home. :(

But your cat? Adorable! (Even more adorable because it’s named Becker.)

NO HE’S MINE, YOU CAN’T HAVE HIM. I already technically stole him from Chelsea. She raised him and I took him home with me. Needless to say everyone was very confused as to where I pulled the name Becker from.

Awww, Maitland would have been an adorable name for a kitty! But yay other pets! What kind of dogs?

Hee, thank you! I assure you he’s a bit of a demon sometimes. In fact I most often call him “Buddy” or “Psycho” (affectionately of course) as opposed to Becker most days. But he’s adorable when he’s sleeping. I’ll try and get a picture next time, though he’s got an uncanny ability to sense when there’s a camera on him.

Speaking of pets with fandom names, I’ve also got a fish named Cas.

OOC; EVERYONE, MEET BECKER

My kitty.
